SAT Chemistry Subject Test

The SAT Chemistry Subject Test is highly recommended for those students who wish to pursue a career in science or engineering. The test is structured to examine a student’s ability to comprehend the most important concepts of chemistry and effectively apply the content to solving specific questions. Taking this test favors the applicant by showcasing his strengths and passion as well as reflecting his deep interest for the subject.

TEST FORMAT

  • Duration – 1 hour ( 60 minutes)
  • 80 Multiple Choice Questions
  • Total Score-800
  • No calculators are allowed

The test can be taken in October, November, December, January, May, and June every year.

Aiming for a High Score:

Your dream score is only a stone’s throw away. Does that sound too simple? Well, the answer is a BIG YES, provided you understand the test question-types and skills assessed and follow a strict and consistent study strategy.

3 Different Question Types:

  1. 1.     Multiple Choice Questions ( 5 Choices)

Usually, this type of question falls under stand-alone category which can be easily accomplished by picking out the right answer choice.

  1. 2.     Classification Type

Under this format, the student has to choose the right answer from a list of 5 choices. The answer choice may repeat for more than one question.

  1. 3.     Relationship Analysis

The trickiest section of the SAT Chemistry Subject Test are tasks comprised of two statements connected by ‘BECAUSE’. If the 2 statements are ‘TRUE’, then the test taker is expected to fill in the third column ‘CE-Correct Explanation’ depending upon the logic on which the questions are based. If the statements are both ‘FALSE’, CE is ruled out.

SKILLS ASSESSED*

  • Application of knowledge- 45%
  • Synthesis of Knowledge-35%
  • Fundamental concepts and knowledge-20%

Majority of this test constitutes analysis and data interpretation (about 80% of the questions) and only 20% are straight-forward questions.

Preparation Guidelines and Tips:

  • Begin the prep by taking a diagnostic SAT test. It allows you to evaluate yourself before formulating a study methodology. The idea is to understand what are your strengths and weaknesses.
  • Depending on the scores from the diagnostic test, devise a structured study plan allocating topics and hours on a daily basis for about 1-2 months. This plan will enhance your ability and depth of knowledge.
  • Practice and concentrate on the 3 different question types separately. It will enable you to tackle each type efficiently as you learn to solve each discretely.
  • Take practice tests to boost your confidence and strictly follow the real test standards WITHOUT FAIL!
  • Study the concepts and theory relevant to the test and not the entire contents of the subject.
